Week 1

I am so excited to be your child's teacher this year!  Please know that it is important to me that every Firstie enjoys coming to school each day and learning new things. I'm sure you have a million questions about what to expect.  Please see answers to some frequently asked questions below. Feel free to contact me any time! FAQs


Birthday Treats

If your child has a birthday during this school year, they are welcome to send in a prepackaged birthday treat to share with our class. We typically celebrate summer birthdays in June, but occasionally parents request to bring something on a half birthday instead.


Specials

Specials classes will begin September 19th. Here is what the first grade schedule will look like.

Monday - Art

Tuesday - Gym

Thursday - Music

Friday - Library 


Communication

Blog/Folder/Email

Mr. Hubble will send a weekly blog post each week with a link to my blog.  Please be sure to check this. I will include news of upcoming events and details about what we're learning in the classroom. The blog will be your primary news-getting source.  Each Friday your child will bring home a folder containing any work samples, notes, or additional communication from the school.  Please return this folder each Monday. Email is the best way to reach me, but you are also welcome to send a note or call the school.  My email address is lfiesbeck@stjoebears.com


Water and Snacks

Please send two healthy snacks for your child each day as well as a water bottle. Please do not send candy or soda.  I do have treats on occasion for the children. If your child has an allergy or sensitivity please be sure to communicate that to the office and to me directly.

Tennis Shoes

I will provide pencil boxes, pencils, crayons, and really pretty much everything else. If you'd like to provide colored pencils and/or markers for your child they can be kept in the pencil boxes as well.

Volunteers

I am thrilled to be able to welcome parent volunteers again this year! I will have more information about this at our Back to School Night.


Masks

Yes, we will be wearing masks all day.  There will be opportunities for breaks. Please have your child keep extra masks in his or her backpack--they can get pretty gross throughout the day.


Sickness

Please monitor your child and be diligent about keeping him/her home when warranted by symptoms. 


Recess

We will have recess three times each day as long as it's not raining, storming, or below 10 degrees. We will also take walks, and head outside to read as much as possible.

April 18-22 NWEA ELA testing dates: April 25, 26, and 27 Math testing dates: May 3, 4    I try hard to make this a nonthreatening experience.  However, it is important that the children take the testing seriously so that we get the best information possible.  Please discuss this with your child and encourage them to do their best.  Many will need to be reminded that it’s not a race! Additionally, please do what you can to be sure your child is at school on those days! Week 18

January 17-21 Academic Updates We will: Do lots of subtraction! Use 10s to subtract Relate counting to addition and subtraction Read and write long i patterns (sight, bike, kite, fight, etc.) Practice making inferences  More editing Write about penguins Learn about perseverance Masks Students having been going through a lot of masks lately.  I think they’re easier to misplace since there are so many other things to keep track of this time of year. Week 20

  January 31 - February 4 Exciting News I am thrilled to share that we will have a student from Western Michigan University’s College of Education joining us in the role of Pre-Intern for the next few months.  His name is Anthony Allen. He will join us all day on Mondays and Wednesdays.  In this role he will observe my teaching and get to know the children.  Over time he will take on additional responsibilities such as instructing small groups, lesson planning, teaching whole group lessons, and trying out all the different things he’ll need to do during his primary internship and subsequent teaching career. When I shared this news with the class they were excited, but a few expressed concerns that things will be very different.  I reassured them that I am not going anywhere!
