Week 20

 January 31 - February 4

Exciting News

I am thrilled to share that we will have a student from Western Michigan University’s College of Education joining us in the role of Pre-Intern for the next few months.  His name is Anthony Allen. He will join us all day on Mondays and Wednesdays.  In this role he will observe my teaching and get to know the children.  Over time he will take on additional responsibilities such as instructing small groups, lesson planning, teaching whole group lessons, and trying out all the different things he’ll need to do during his primary internship and subsequent teaching career. When I shared this news with the class they were excited, but a few expressed concerns that things will be very different.  I reassured them that I am not going anywhere! Mr. Allen and I will be working as a team.  In my view we are adding to our classroom far more than we are altering it.

Greeting from Mr. Allen

Hi parents!  My name is Anthony Allen and I am thrilled to be accepted into your classroom community.  As a Saint Joseph grad myself I cannot express how happy I am to be back here as a part of the community that I started my journey in.  I cannot wait to meet everyone and I look forward to a semester of growth and fun!

Academic Updates

We will:

  • Continue to work on summarizing

  • Review and practice our decoding skills

  • Study Long U words (blue, few, new, clue, stew, etc.)

  • Work on elaborating when we write

  • Build, compare, deconstruct numbers using base 10 blocks

  • Introduce mapping

  • Explore vibrations and sound

STEM

I’d be grateful for continued help growing our collection of items for STEM time: toilet paper/paper towel tubes, egg cartons, duct tape, painter’s tape, popsicle sticks, thin and short dowel rods, elmer’s glue, and pipe cleaners. If you have any of these items we will put them to good use! Also, if anybody is willing to donate a hot glue gun I would really appreciate it. Don’t worry! I will be the one operating it for their projects.  Hot glue and seven year olds are a scary combination!

Valentine’s Day

Reminder: all our Valentine enjoyment will be done in-house.  Please do not send anything in.
