April 25-29 NWEA ELA testing dates: April 25, 26, and 27 Math testing dates: May 2, 3, 4    Please be sure your child’s computer is charged! Field Trip Hurray!  We will be going to Sarett Nature Center on Thursday, April 28.  We will ride the bus.  If you would like to meet us there you are more than welcome to do so.  The cost for parents is $5.  This can be paid upon arrival at Sarett.  Animal Project Choice Boards were sent home on Friday.  Please review these together and help your child decide which projects he or she would like to complete. The idea of a due date is brand new to Firsties.  We will discuss this in class and talk about pacing.  Please help us reinforce this idea.  

April 18-22 NWEA ELA testing dates: April 25, 26, and 27 Math testing dates: May 3, 4    I try hard to make this a nonthreatening experience.  However, it is important that the children take the testing seriously so that we get the best information possible.  Please discuss this with your child and encourage them to do their best.  Many will need to be reminded that it’s not a race! Additionally, please do what you can to be sure your child is at school on those days! Mr.  Allen’s Last Day Mr. Allen’s presence in our classroom has been overwhelmingly positive.  He has been a huge help to me, but more importantly to our Firsties!  The time he has spent working with and nurturing the kiddos these last months has been invaluable.  His last day with us is Wednesday.  Since he won’t be with us on Tuesday we will spend time making him some special things.  I’ll bring a treat for everybody on Wednesday to have a bit of a sendoff party...

April 11-15 Welcome back to the routine! We have so much yet to learn this year! Students will be very busy in our remaining 9 weeks together. Practice at Home In order to prepare your Firstie for the move to 2nd grade please be sure to spend time on the following every week: Nightly reading Addition and subtraction flashcards Lexia IXL or Moby RAZ kids, Storyline Online, or EPIC Journaling Animal Project First Graders will be VERY busy in the coming weeks researching an animal and creating a variety of projects to show their understanding of its physical characteristics, habitat, food sources, and predators.  Information will be coming home in your child’s Friday folder this week for your review and signature. While most of the research will be done at school, the projects will be completed at home.

  March 28-31 Spring is in the air!  The students seem ready for a much-deserved break. They’ve been working very hard.  This break has a tendency to feel like the finish line.  Please help us by reminding your Firstie that we still have a lot of learning yet to come this year! We have 9 more weeks of growth ahead of us! Academic Updates We will: Learn about open vowels and hard vs. soft C/G Practice telling time Continue to work on +/- fact fluency Practice and perform our readers theaters Exciting Dramatic Play Project Micah’s mom, Chloe, has graciously agreed to help me with a project for your children that I’m really hoping to get up and running.  The idea is to support learning through purposeful play.   March 21-25 Program Details On March 23 please have your child wear pajamas to school and bring a stuffed animal.  We will be performing for students during the school day. That evening please arrive at St. Joe High School by 5:15.  Bring the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and neighbors.  This is a very enjoyable program.  The children have been working very hard to prepare a great show for you!  Academic Updates We will: Learn about Y as a vowel Continue studying geometry and fractions Continue to work on +/- fact fluency Finish up our compare and contrast unit Begin practice for Reader’s Theater Exciting Dramatic Play Project Micah’s mom, Chloe, has graciously agreed to help me with a project for your children that I’m really hoping to get up and running.  The idea is to support learning through purposeful play.   March 14-18 Since we do not have school on Monday we will do our National Potato Chip Day activities on Tuesday.  If you’d still like to send in some chips please sign up here. Coming up 3-18 National Let’s Laugh Day is March 19. We will share jokes on Friday. March 7-11 We had a blast with Seuss week! Crazy hair day was especially fun.  This week we will continue to focus on books as we work our way through the whole school March is Reading Month book brackets that our awesome media team has put together.  Books always win!  Report cards will be coming home this week.  Once you’ve had a chance to look them over please let me know if you have any questions or if you’d like to meet to discuss your child’s progress.  Academic Updates We will: Focus on the “er, ir, and ur” sounds in words like: bird, word, mother, purr, stir, etc. Begin a geometry unit Continue learning about light and sound (at home look for examples of transparent, translucent, and opaque objects!)
